Do I Need to Bring My Own Charging Cable?

Do I Need to Bring My Own Charging Cable?

Use this guide to work out whether the charger you’ve picked has a cable in-built, or whether you’ll need to bring your own.

Tethered vs untethered chargers

Chargers on the Wevolt Network fall into two patterns:

  • Tethered (cable in-built) — the cable is permanently attached to the charger. Just unhook it and plug it into your vehicle.
  • Untethered (bring your own) — the charger has a socket only. You need to provide your own cable that fits both your vehicle and the charger socket.

How to check before you go

  1. Open the Wevolt App.
  2. Tap the charging station you wish to use on the map.
  3. In the middle of the screen under Select Connector, the light grey box shows either “Bring Your Cable” or “Cable Available”.

If a station has more than one connector, check each one — it’s common for a single station to mix tethered and untethered options.

Common connector types in Australia

  • CCS2 — DC fast charging. Almost always tethered. Used by most modern EVs in Australia for high-speed charging.
  • Type 2 — AC charging. Found on most AC chargers. Can be tethered or untethered — check the listing.
  • AC tethered — an AC charger with a Type 2 cable already attached. No cable needed.

As a rule of thumb: DC chargers are nearly always tethered. AC chargers vary.

Arrived without a cable?

If you’ve arrived at an untethered charger and don’t have your own cable, open the Wevolt App and look for a nearby alternative:

  • Open the Map tab.
  • Tap the filter icon and narrow the results to chargers with a cable in-built (look for the “Cable Available” or AC tethered option).
  • Look for any DC fast chargers nearby — these are almost always tethered.

✓ A cable in the boot saves the trip

If you regularly use AC chargers, keep a Type 2 to Type 2 cable in your vehicle. It opens up every untethered AC charger on the network.
